Normal Upper Extremity Venous Duplex (DVT) Report Template
Normal upper extremity venous duplex report template: segment-by-segment compressibility and waveforms from internal jugular to forearm, with subclavian notes.
EXAMINATION: Venous duplex ultrasound of the [right/left] upper extremity. CLINICAL HISTORY: [indication] COMPARISON: None available. TECHNIQUE: Real-time grayscale compression, color and spectral Doppler imaging of the deep and superficial veins of the upper extremity. FINDINGS: Internal jugular vein: Patent and compressible. Normal respiratory phasicity and cardiac pulsatility. No intraluminal thrombus. Subclavian vein: Patent, with complete color filling and normal spectral phasicity and transmitted cardiac pulsatility. No intraluminal thrombus. Axillary vein: Compressible. Normal color filling and augmentation. Brachial veins: Compressible throughout. Normal color filling. Basilic vein: Compressible. No thrombus. Cephalic vein: Compressible. No thrombus. IMPRESSION: 1. No deep or superficial venous thrombosis in the [right/left] upper extremity.
Dictation notes
- The subclavian vein cannot be compressed beneath the clavicle — patency there rests on color filling, phasicity and pulsatility, and the report should name those criteria rather than claim compressibility.
- Blunted or absent cardiac pulsatility at the subclavian or internal jugular vein is indirect evidence of central (brachiocephalic or SVC) obstruction — compare sides and give it its own impression line.
- Most positive upper extremity studies are catheter-associated — name the PICC or port and the vein segment it occupies even when no thrombus is present.
